The end of the semester and academic year is upon us, and Cottey is celebrating with a picnic and performance on Saturday, May 4, at 5:45 p.m. at BIL Hill. The Cottey College Department of Theatre will present 12 Dancing Princesses on Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts. The Cottey-in-Motion Dance Company (Co-Motion) will present its spring dance concert on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts. Community Blood Center (CBC), the provider of blood services to local hospitals, will conduct a blood drive at Cottey College on Tuesday, April 16, in the lobby of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts. Cottey College had two students place in the 54th Annual Missouri Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference and Business Competition. Singer Chris Ayer will perform at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in Raney Dining Room on the Cottey College campus. The Piano Trio Concert, originally scheduled for Friday, March 29, has been changed to a cello concert by Matthew Herren due to a scheduling conflict with the visiting faculty artists. Cottey College was named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Cottey College Comets, got their first victory in their first home game on their first home field, as they defeated Missouri Valley College junior varsity 5-4. Two Cottey College students were honored by the Missouri Community College Association Wednesday in Jefferson City. Cottey College has received notification from its accrediting agency, The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, that it has been granted general authority to offer additional baccalaureate programs in the social sciences and humanities, and has received an additional 10 years of accreditation. The Cottey College Comets' season ended in the Region XVI postseason tournament when they lost 36-56 in the semifinals to St. Louis Community College. The Cottey College Comets travelled to Iola, Kansas, on Friday, September 28, to take on the Red Devils of Allen County Community College in a volleyball match. The home team was not a gracious host as they defeated the Comets in three games 10-25, 12-25, and 27-29. The Cottey College Comets defeated the Red Devils from Wentworth Military Academy for the second time this season. This time the Red Devils took the Comets to five games, but the home team came out to the good 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 20-25, and 15-9. Since 2005, this five-man group has toured nationally and abroad and has brought their unique, high-energy brand of a cappella to hundreds of thousands. Carlos is an award-winning spoken word poet, playwright, and teaching artist. As a competitive slam poet, he won the National Poetry Slam championship in 2007 and again in 2008. He has performed in all corners of the nation and on Broadway. He has been twice nominated for the campus activities National Spoken Word Artist of the Year. Softball players Taylor Buck and Kelly Spong were both named to the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award list. To be on that list, an athlete must have a grade point average between 3.60 and 3.79 on a 4.0 scale.
