The Cottey College Comets had their chances, but ultimately fell to the Lady Vikings of Hesston College, 66-63, Thursday night in Hinkhouse. The Comets have lost nine games in a row since defeating the Lady Larks, 79-71, last month at Hesston, Kansas.
The Comets took a 33-30 lead at the half, largely due to the scoring of Blaklee Sanders who had 12 points in the opening 20 minutes. Jordan Davidson, who typically leads the team in scoring had eight points in that half. Initially, it looked like the Lady Vikings were going to run away with it in the first half as they broke to a 24-18 lead. The Comets, however, got their offense going at the end of the half, scoring the last nine points of the frame.
Cottey took a 42-34 lead in the second half, but Hesston went on an 11-2 run to grab the lead at 44-46, and the game was nip-and-tuck from that point on. The Comets had a one-point lead with just over a minute to play when Hesston drained a clutch three-pointer to retake the lead. The Comets turned the ball over on their next possession and were forced to foul. The Lady Vikings hit both free throws to essentially seal the game.
Sanders led Cottey with 18 points and second-year Comets Davidson and Santana Cruz also scored in double digits. Davidson had 16 points and Cruz added 14.
The loss dropped the Comets to 6-15 on the year. They will conclude their regular-season schedule on Thursday, March 1, when nationally-ranked North Arkansas visits the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium. That game will tip off at 6 p.m.
