Volleyball Comets Get First Win of Season
The Cottey College Comets volleyball team got its first win of the season on lucky Friday the 13th as they defeated Independence Community College in five games: 17-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, and 15-13.
“All the hard work this team has done to prepare for their first victory has finally paid off!” said head coach Marla Kannady Foreman.
With the match tied at two games each, the Comets took a lead in game five, but began to make a few errors in that pivotal game.
“We had the lead in game five at one point, and then tried to do too much, because we got excited about the chance to get that first win,” said Foreman. “However, a quick time out to remind the team of the things that got us that lead, without all the hype, was enough to get us back in focus and finish the match.”
Team leaders for the Comets were Kasey Hall and Regan Kannady with two aces each, Maddie Lugenbeel with 20 assists and Kelsey Davidson with 10 kills and 25 digs. There was a three-way tie in the team lead for blocks as Davidson, Jalilah Cox and Skyler Ford each recorded four on the evening.
The win raised the Comets’ record to 1-5 on the season. Next up is a match against Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri. The first home match of the season will be on Tuesday, October 1, against Baptist Bible College.
