Comets Drop High-Scoring Doubleheader at Home

It was not a favorable wind blowing at Vanek Family Memorial Field for the Cottey Comets on a beautiful, blue sky Saturday, April 6. The wind was blowing out and the Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals took advantage, hitting a dozen home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Comets. Mineral Area needed every one of those homers to narrowly win both games, 11-10, in the opener and 13-12 in the nightcap.

The Comets found themselves behind early in the first game, as the Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Cottey pushed three more runs across the plate in the fourth inning to narrow the gap to 7-4. Mineral Area kept up their offensive assault, however, pushing the lead to 10-5 by the sixth inning. One thing this Comets team has going for them is they can swing the bats. In the bottom half of the sixth, Cottey scored five times to tie the game at 10, thrilling a capacity crowd at the field. MACC's Mariah Korokis hit the game-winning homer in the top of the seventh inning. The Comets had their chance to win, though, as they put runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but Danielle Womack's long fly to center was caught on the warning track to end the game.

In game two, Mineral Area hit eight home runs, including three by clean-up hitter Courtney Massengale and two by Kallie Federhofer for the 13-12 victory. Cottey led, 6-1, after two innings before the Lady Cardinals scored three runs in the third and four more in the fourth for an 8-8 tie. Mineral Area took a 13-10 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to see the "Comeback Comets" score twice on a single by Lexi Johnson, and a bases-loaded walk to Kaitlin Johnson before Hallie Comer's fly to center was caught to end the game.

The Comets' record now stands at 2-6. Cottey's games against Missouri Valley College junior-varsity this afternoon at Marshall have been cancelled due to weather. The next scheduled home game for the Comets is on April 16 against North Arkansas Community College. The first game of that doubleheader will begin at noon.
