Comets Defeat MO Valley in First Home Game on New Home Field

The Cottey College Comets, got their first victory in their first home game on their first home field, as they defeated Missouri Valley College junior varsity 5-4. In the second game, the Comets' rally fell short as they lost the nightcap 10-12.

Emma Rathe threw the first pitch on the new field. It was a ball. After walking the first batter, she struck out the side to end the inning. In the second inning, Christine Nevins got the first Comets' hit, and Lexi Johnson drove in the first run as Cottey jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of an inning.

The Comets had a 3-0 lead when the Lady Vikings scored two of their own. Late in the game, the visitors grabbed a 3-4 lead, but Cottey answered with two runs of its own to hold a slim 5-4 lead, which they were able to defend.

In game two, Rathe hit the first home run on the new field as she went deep to left and drove in two to give the Comets a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second.

It was an offensive battle on a cold, blustery day as both teams were hitting the ball well. The Lady Vikings took an 8-5 lead into the final inning, but the Comets were not done as they sent nine batters to the plate, scoring three runs and leaving the bases full. The faithful fans who braved the cold were sure they were watching a comeback victory as the Comets scored three runs to tie the game and needed only a hit or a walk with two outs to win it. However, they could not push across the winning run and the game went into extra innings.

In international rules, each team begins the inning with a runner at second base and plays to three outs. Missouri Valley's bats were still active as they drove four runs home in the top of the eighth inning to take an 8-12 lead.

The Comets were still hitting, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't match the visitors' offensive output in the extra frame.

Rathe got the win in game one and Stevie Van Horn took the loss in game two.

With the split, the Comets' record is 2-2 on the season. Due to projected bad weather, the home games scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, will not be played at Cottey. They may either be played at the opponent's location or cancelled. The next scheduled home game is for Wednesday, March 27, against Kansas City Kansas Community College. All home games are played at Vanek Family Memorial Field on the northeast corner of College and Sycamore streets in Nevada, Missouri.
