Comets Lose in Semifinals of Region XVI
The Cottey College Comets' season ended in the Region XVI postseason tournament when they lost 36-56 in the semifinals to St. Louis Community College.
The Archers were a team the Comets had defeated twice in the regular season, but with playmaker Dayna Turnbull out with an ankle injury, they couldn't muster enough offense against the quicker team from St. Louis. Give the Comets credit for playing good defense, though. The first half score was only 18-17 in favor of St. Louis.
"We played well on the defensive end of the floor limiting a good St. Louis team to 56 points," said head coach Dave Ketterman. "I was pleased with our effort there. We just could not get into any good flow or rhythm on offense. You have to credit St. Louis with that as they put bigger, more athletic defenders on our primary scorers. The absence of our playmaker Dayna Turnbull was a big factor in the outcome. She makes so many plays for us and sets up our other scorers."
The leading scorer for Cottey was Kat Zumalt with 18 points; 12 of those came in the second half. No other Comets player had more than four points.
After the tournament, Dayna Turnbull and Blaklee Sanders were named to the All-Region First Team, and Bailey Braden and Selena Gochenour were named to the All-Region Second Team.
The Comets ended the season with a record of 16-4. Their .800 winning percentage is the best of any Comets basketball team and they spent 12 consecutive weeks from December through February ranked in the NJCAA Division II top 25 poll.
