Comets Get Win in OT Over Hesston
The Cottey College Comets kept their winning streak alive with a 56-53 overtime road victory over Hesston College on Saturday.
It didn't look like it was going to be the Comets' day in the first half as they trailed 35-23 at the break. Poor shooting dogged the Comets all game. In fact, Cottey shot 21 percent from the field for the whole game (15 of 71). Free throw shooting helped the Comets as they connected on 25 of 37 shots for 67 percent from the charity stripe.
The Comets played better in the second half, outscoring Hesston 27-15 to forge a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation. The low scoring continued in the overtime period as Cottey edged the Lady Larks 6-3 in the final five minutes.
Leading scorer for the Comets was Dayna Turnbull with 16 points. Also in double figures was Blaklee Sanders with 13 points.
The win raised the Comets' record to 12-1 on the year. Next up is a trip to Trenton, Missouri, on Wednesday evening to play the always tough North Central Missouri College. The next home game for the Comets is on Saturday, February 2, when they have a rematch with Hesston College. That game will tip off at 1 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium.
