Comets Open Season With Win On Road
The Cottey College Comets opened their basketball season on the road last night with a 77-51 win against the Missouri Valley College junior varsity in Marshall, Missouri.
The Comets had a slow first half as both teams hit the break with a 31-31 tie. In the second half, however, Cottey opened up the offense and tightened up the defense, scoring 46 points in the second frame while holding the home team to 20 points.
Second-year player Blaklee Sanders was the big gun in the second half with 18 of her game-high 25 points in the final 20 minutes. Sanders almost matched Missouri Valley's second-half scoring by herself. Second-year player Petra Stankovic hit three treys in that half, and first-year player Dayna Turnbull added seven points in the second half to go with her 10 first-half points. Those three were the only Comets in double figures, but Selena Gochenour just missed with nine points. Stankovic had a double-double adding 12 rebounds to her 11 points.
The Comets have a 1-0 record on the young season. Next up is a series of four home games. The home opener is Tuesday, November 13, against Ozark Christian College. That game will tip off at 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Center Gymnasium.
